I havent been able to sleep so good this night, I guess its a lot of thoughts from meeting all the really nice teenagers yesterday;=) But well, I can sleep when I get home and can relax again.
The day yesterday was a very different, a bit scary but very rewarding day for me. I was so terribly nervous when I entered the first group of kids. It felt like I wanted to just fly home immediately cause my fear of speaking in front of others just made me feel overwhelmed.
The second and third group I also felt the same and said to myself that I wont do this ever again;=)
But when we arrived to the the second school and I entered, there were lots of kids sitting and cheering my name and Nightwish and I felt so welcomed and they were just amazing and fun to meet! The first group was a really great group with mostly guys and they were all so open and easy to connect with. They all wanted signatures and we had a fun time together. They made me relax more and I thank them all for that;=)
Here they are and as you can see we had fun!
The last group was a group of mostly girls and I got the best feeling from them. My story is a lot about my own teenage time where I had big difficulties with the girls in my class, being outfrosen and teased for 3 years. Since they all were girls in this class I felt it was a bit easier to tell my story and they also told me they had a lot of problems among their classes with the same thing.
In Sweden 17 000 kids are mocked in school EVERY DAY! It´s just not ok and if I can get at least one person that bully another kid to think about what he does and hopefully stop doing it - that´s amazing.
If I can get one person that are mocked or outfrozen to feel that they are not alone, that many big and recognized people have had the same problems in their childhood, and get that person to stand up for him/herself and be true to him/herself no matter what others say and go out to reach their goals in life - that´s just amazing!
Today I continue on and will meet 5 classes in other schools and I hope my day will be as rewarding as yesterday:=)

Anette it isn't fair! Why is Sweden so far away? It would be a dream come true if you turned up at my school in England! There are a few Nightwish fans there but everybody knows your name, mainly because I talk about you being such an inspiration! If you do ever come to England just give me a shout! You are amazing and I look up to you a lot, especially with my own music. Much love :)

ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful that you're speaking out against bullying. Here in the States, we have a culture where we teach kids what to do if they're being bullied, but not how to stop bullying behavior. I think bullying is starting to get more coverage, but it's not enough yet.
Bullying IS a serious issue, and finding one more person out there that stands up against it is wonderful :]

ReplyDeleteI understand you, because when I was high school student, I was mocked, being outfrozen and teased too. And becaus of these I took a resolution years ago: I will fight against exclusion. It's really cool what you do and don't be afraid: you're good at what you do and you're a good exemplary. A real ideal. :)

ReplyDeleteIt doesn't look quite the way I was thinking of but just as well, I was thinking more of a general assembly type presentation, 500 to a 1000students at a time...my number of seems quite off. Lucky you no monster of a headache!
Have a question though, a couple of the words you used to describe a problem that students have need to be explained a little to me. One being 'mocked' and the other 'outfrozen' I could venture a guess but I would rather hear it explained by you maybe. Other than it reads very well, thank you:) (When you have the time of course)

Good to hear that you had fun at the schools. Those kids are so lucky to have met you. Is this for an anti bullying campaign or is there another purpose for the school visits?

ReplyDeleteYou are right about the bullying. It happens to many people. I was bullied and mocked in school so I know how it feels. The feeling never truly leaves you and I hate it that nasty people can do that to another person. I really don't get it.
It makes me sick when you hear that some kids are driven to suicide because of bullying. What a sick world we live in!

Wow, Anette this is amazing! You are such a good person. <3 I think if I can when I get a bit older, I would like to do the same, talk to schools about mocking and things like that. It's important for this to stop! I know how it feels, I've been bullied in my life, to a point where I had to leave my first elementary school. It was sad but the best decision I made since things looked up from there :)

it's been a long time actually -this time- since my last comment, but I want you to know I've been in a rush BUT I have been reading you all the time;=)
It's always a big event for everyone when you manage to overcome your fears: that is very rewarding. There are those frequent days where we don't want to open to others, but when we try to go beyond that limit there are no boundaries anymore and you just feel happy because of that!
As some peoples say: a meeting can change your life.
I wish you good luck for the next meeting.
WIll there be any audio or video recording (from the guys camera or from yours?) from that experience? I really hope so.

ReplyDeleteI then been bullied in the class. It was not a great time and I'm glad it's over. They pelted me articles with and insulted me. I've always been more of a quiet guy and heard metal, of course that was something that the others somehow did not fit. With the girls I got along well .... one or the other there was also this time I got on with the not so good, but that was not bad ... they went out of the way and then it was good.
I had my friends in class and I gave myself.
I hope the next time it is also so good!

and more cool that you help the antibulling, i can tell you that i passed by bulling since i remember, but i learned that i musn't show weakness against them, and i stil can't believe it, at our age [18-19] they bully to their classroom,but well i'm not a troublemaker :)

This is a nice thing you're doing. I was bullied during high school and standing up is no easy thing! I was able to do so because at the time I had the confidence and a beautiful family (and gladly, I still do). Now I'm a teacher at a University and its INCREDIBLE to see how grown ups still try to bully others... in the very same way as in school!

ReplyDeleteI didn't know you got bullied too, it's the most terrible thing in school. I got bullied too and that because I stood up for a group of kids. There was this girl deciding everything we did during the break and I knew that they wanted to do other things and told her that. The group agreed with me, not her and then it all started. One time she and her youth group went to the place where I took horse riding lessons and made noise when I drove by to make me fall of my horse. I didn't even dare telling my parents who were standing on the other side. But in the end I told the owner and she threw them all out. The look on her face was priceless, in class she never got punished because she acted like the "angel" of the teacher. This was a first for her :D
A few years later, I started to like Nightwish and the kids in my class laughed at me because they found its fans emo, gothic or just plain weird. They also called the music for an opera or a church. I have always wondered whether they would still dare to laugh in front of the band and crew, such strong and tall guys involved :D
I wish you a lot of fun during the next days and I'm sure you'll get more confident at speaking in front of people :)

ReplyDeleteI've worked as a teacher for some years now (mostly with the kids between 6 and 13 years, but also some older pupils) and I think it's often better when people come from "outside" and tell about imporant things, and not just their own teacher. And to get you at their school must be so cool! :))) Good luck on Friday too!

But you are right,the problems that kids have because of school. I think it would be better if we had classes by internet,at least we would have problems,but we also wouldn't meet new people...Everyone should change to better.
Im 13,so i understand ALL the problems,the girls that what to have nice clothes and make up,everyone wants atention,they want to be thin and they talk bad things about the others.
My teachers are talking about bullying and they put videos,i look tomy friends and they laught about it,they think it's fun to watch videos,but when we talk really about it they get a bit sad,but after 5 minutes they start making fun again,and it's just stupid :S
They want to be free and act like adults,but they act like kids,but it's not funny,they should grow up and understand other people's feelings :)
But what can we do ? :(

Anette I think that in every country there children being mocked at school!!!!!! i was mocked by my classmates. i was 0nly 11.it was especially boys. my way from home to school was a real hell. but when one girl and a boy went to another school everything became OK!

In Croatia, we don't have so serious mocking in the school, maybe in some places. But, in my ex-school, I wasn't so mocked. It was just kidding. :)
And now, in high school, we are an united class and we just kidding. But other kids sometimes mocked us because they think they are bigger and better than we our. And that is not true because we are in gymnasium and will we become much important people in our lives than they would be. They are in some technique school and most of them are very rude. Grr...
