Cursing

Just finished helping my son with his home work. He did good and I love sitting there hearing his thoughts.
I loved going to school the first years and I just adored my first school teacher. She was so kind and sweet but at the same time also taught us to not curse (or at least she did try;=)

Whenever someone cursed, she sent us to the toilet where we had to open the lid - face down into the toilet and then she said:

- Ok, so say all the cursing words you ever can come up with until there are no left. Then you can get back to the class room!

Oh, so sweet she was... I still remember hanging there with the head down in the toilet bowl and at that time I didnt come up with so many words...it was like I said 2 or three and then my head was blank...;=)

Some teachers just leave us with such good memories and then others we just want to forget all about;=)

  1. Eh eh xD That sounds like an effective way to stop cursing =') Glad they didn't use it at my schools =)

The only thing I remember from my 1st teacher was that she was nice. And that my friend and I always imagined that our bread-boxes were sticker machines xD But we go to school at the age of 4 already here in the Netherlands, so it's not so strange I guess..
But when we moved to Groningen I got a teacher that was terrible, I still get the shivers when I think of her =( I was 7 then.

And now in High school there are so many teachers, but most of them are so bad tempered, I just can't understand why they started teaching anyway.
And some are so nice and that are the ones that can really teach you something, I think. When they are motivating you get motivated too =)

    Take care

  2. My first teacher was a nice person as well but she didn't use that kind of methods. I think, there wasn't a lot of cursing back than.

In Secondary School some teachers had very hard methods to punish students who couldn't behave... Our class was the most feared class among teachers back in year 6. XD
The most evil teacher back in year 8 was my history teacher. I can't even explain why. She insulted students and she nearly slapped one.
My favourite teacher was my English teacher. She is a very nice person who supported me much. :)

Now in commercial college I have a lot of different teachers as well. My religious education teacher asked me today what my favourite band is... yeah and now I have to bring a Nightwish CD to school. XD

    Hugs and Greetings from Germany

  4. Awww, it was a sweet post to read... :)
My first school teacher was an old nun close to retirement, but she was not too bad. One of the worse was when i was 7, and my favorite was when i was 8... The last one incindentally turned friend with my mother, and it was quite a blessing the following year, when my mother had to be hospitalized for depression... I remember staying a whole month at my teacher's appartment, sleeping on her couch and going to school with her (and it was the month of my 9th bday). Wish i could have fond memories of school, but being the one bullied by other kids or alone with my best friend (the book i was reading) it's everything but fond memories... :(

Ooh what a nice and lovely idea of that teacher, you remember it good, so that's a proof that it did work (at least) a bit :)
It's something I could try out while teaching :) Learning as a kid helps so much when the teacher is really into the kids, when she builds up her lessons with the kids and not above the kids.

But the education is different in so many country's, 2 students of my old class went last year on a trip to Sweden and participated in classes (for kids and teens between 7 and 16 years old I thought? Here in Belgium we have schools for children from 6 till 12 years old, and then other schools for teens between 12 and 18 years old.)
The 2 students said that the schools are so much different Sweden, it's much more about the kids that decide what to do according to their needs and interests. (This is what the students said ;) Don't really know if it was a private school or just a regular school that they were talking about).
In Belgium it's more like a standard education where the kids need to be along with it (which I think is more negative and more like teaching above the kids). I thought that they also said that there are 3 teachers for a group of 20 children (here in Belgium 1 theacher for 20 children or less/more children.) The also said that the classroom looks practical with a kitchen, pillows, etc.. Here in Belgium it's just tables with chairs and a readingcorner/discussioncorner (not always though).
So the students their mouths fell literaly open when they saw that. They really wanted to work there in Sweden, but that's not so easy when you live in Belgium ofcourse and when you don't speak the language that well.
But at the other hand, numbers show that Belgian education has a high standard. (But I really don't know the standard about Sweden or any other country ;)
So country's could probably learn a lot about each others systems.
Haha, I will stop talking about education here, I could go on a bit more. But don't wanna bother you with it ;)
    Sleep tight this night

  7. That's true, most of my teachers were neither enough qualified nor good as people. I hadn't enjoyed school since 6th of 7th grade. And by 11th all the teachers disliked me (and I disliked them) because I've set my aims and put all of me into preparing to university entrance exams. Few weeks ago I visited school and it was nice to see that something changed towards good side. But I also saw the teacher I hated with all my heart who mocked and hated me in the 6th grade - and I never could understand why. He was fired a year later our acquaintance but now teaches again and I'm so really against it. This man shouldn't work with children at all. And his knowledge is really poor too. It turned out that he was AFRAID of me - that's what he told my fav teacher of Russian;))) I almost fell from my chair when heard it! XD
Today we started the Middle Ages literature course and it was really interesting, so after the lection I rushed to the library and got a book of Scandinavian mythology. The names are really difficult, but stories - amazing (and sometimes - very funny). Reading about Vikings now..

I wonder, do you like Scandinavian mythology and tales? Have you read them in school? And which ones do you like most of all?

    With love,
    Kira=)

  8. That's hilarious and kind of gross at the same time. I'll have to keep that in mind when my little cousin starts trying to sneak curse words around Cousin Sammy. Ha! Little bugger thinks he can curse around me, bah. Nice try, kiddo, now go stick your head in the toilet and curse to the sewer monsters. Knowing him, though, he'd think it was hilarious. Oh well, lol.

I don't think any of my teachers ever had much to do about cursing... I remember my Grandma had a jar and you had to put 25 cents in it for every word you used. I think she made about fifty American in the year I lived with her. XD

What a funny way of teaching the children not to curse ;=)
I still remember my firt teacher, she was such a lovely person! Sometimes I miss the days wich all I needed to do was funny draws with my crayons.

  11. I've never heard about this way of teaching to not curse. :) I remember that when someone cursed, the teacher always stared at the person with a mad face. That was enough to the kid stop saying curse words.
Some teachers leave us with good memories indeed. I had some that were too good, and had some crazy and bad ones, as well.

School was like my second home, I've befriended many people, learned how to deal with relationships and numbers... Sometimes I wish I could get back to school again, hehehe.
It was great to hear about your school time.

Take care! Lots of warm hugs from Brazil.

  12. Oh my goooosh guuuurl!!! I've never
    heard something so sad...
yet funny at the same time. I'm sorry
that she did that kind of thing. But that's a
funny way of stopping things like that-
and for the most part it probably worked.

Funny thing that you're talking about
cursing. For some reason when people randomly
say a curse word, sometimes how they say
it is humorous to me. That may be immature,
but at least I get a laugh out of serious things. Anyway- today I was watching this
Tarja press conference she held for fans in
2008. And randomly when talking and
describing something, she'd blurt out how
it was "shitty", or "damn" she hates
getting sick, or that she's not telling
    you lies or "bullshit".

I just find humor out of "celebrities" cursing normally. Like when you posted a
    post called "Shitty morning",
when you scratched the column with your
    car and was like, "f-ck!".
I don't know why but the random curse word
was kinda funny. Sorry about your car though-
    that wasn't funny;=(

Sorry about that whole curse word topic
I just had- anyway, I adored my first
year teacher too. She was very nice and like
a grandmother to me... But that was at my old
school, so I can't see her very often.
But when I visit I always like to have a nice
chat with her. I'll be graduating high school
next year, and she always tells me
how fast she thinks I'm growing up and that
I make her feel old. Haha

    But being that I'm only 17, I don't
have children. But I do like helping my
    brothers with their homework.
When your older you forget how hard it was
back then, and it's fun to see how they think
about things. But hard at the same time-
because the way it was taught to me isn't the
same way it's now taught to them.

Speaking of school, I haven't been since
last Thursday. I missed Friday and Monday-
I didn't feel good. Then missed
yesterday and today because of all the snow!

    Well, enjoy your evening!

    Hugs and love, Katie T.

  13. Oh you're so right. I remember with affection my 2nd grade teacher, an old woman named Angelica who was so so kind and now she is retired from job because of her age. She didn't teach us how to avoid cursing, I think it was because the whole group behave and didn't cause any trouble.

I have some teachers who I never wanna see again and I try to forget. They were/are bitter and got angry for the simplest reasons.

    Big hugs ^^

  14. Hey Anette, sorry but i don't see my comment here. What's happened? Did you get it?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh, that's such a sweet little story! I can almost picture it. I think the reason to stop cursing was actually the shame of being sent to the toilet AND the classmates knowing it, more than having to shout curse words at a toilet seat. Anyway, I suppose it was pretty effective.
Thanks for sharing these memories and short stories with us. It's fun to read them.
Have a nice night, sleep well!

Hej.How are you today ? What have you done today ? Here my answer to your statement about Sweden....

That's very sad and you're right, that Sweden is an expensive country. This is my biggest dream too and I'm so glad that our friends have got a house there in the near of Linköping ! Without them I couldn't make holidays in Sweden. Now I'm taking money back every month so I hope that I have enough pocket money when I'm in Sweden. For 5 days ago I looked how much expensive the 'Ramlösa' Water is and it costs 2,50 Euro for 1,5l ! That's very expensive!!! Here in Germany water costs amount 30 cents..- WOOW ! Thats a different.
But I heard from an old man how lived in Sweden and made long tours trough Scandinavia, that Ramlösa makes so much white teeth if you drink it ! I'll do that and I'll see how it will go !

And to your question about the postcard: If I will remember that you want a post card I can send one to you, If I could get one ;) (because there's landspace also called 'pampa' here in Ger.) But you have to say me your adress and these things. If you wanna do that, than do. But maybe on a place where it's more private ! Maybe with e-mail etc.

Okay..Have a nice day ! Don't worry and I hope you write me back after this loong loong text ;)
Ps: Today my package came with my new Nightwish articles ! ;D I'm so happy. The calender is already on my wall ♥ and I wear the t-shirt !The thing you asked Anette is very good. I wold wanna do this too but I'm a little bit worry and afraid about her possible answers... what do you think ? *blush*

  17. Your post was wonderful.
    I read it very much.
You described it so lovely.Ich had to smile.
You are right: there are moments you never want to forget and then there are others that you would never have again in your thoughts.
    Heres my story...

In the 7th Class I had a geography teacher, she was then still a trainee. From the very beginning we were on the same line. We had the same humor, same interests, everything fit. I would say we were almost friends. But here in Germany friendships between students and teachers are not welcome. So unfortunately we had no chance.
I wrote her poems and letters and have made their personal and creative gifts. She said that she liked me very much. We even have telephones.
1,5 years later she moved to Flensburg to be there to make the tests to become a teacher. That was our end. She said she would contact me, because I never wanted to break off contact. I do not know how the whole to stand. In any case, she has not even reported in the last 2 years and I am very, very sad. I think of her every day.
That was our end. So I did not want that. I am so sad and disappointed. Every day I go to my mailbox and look to see if she has written to me. But every day I am disappointed again. Every day I hope for a call. But nothing happened. And I constantly ask myself whether I had done something wrong or she has forgotten me.
I do not know where she lives, have no address.

Perhaps you know how I could get over it? Have you already made such experiences? Maybe you can answer me with some love to help to survive.I trust in you and ask for a response.

Lots of Love Hugs and warm. Sleep well. Laura

  18. Wow, that was a little weird! I mean, here in Brazil, teachers are not allowed to do such things. Usually they just do... Nothing. Yeah, education sucks in Brazil. But we have some good teachers, and I remember one day, when I asked the teacher what "slut" meant. She went crazy and called my parents! They yelled at me for hours, but they never teached me the meaning of that word... Well, later, I learned, but if they have told me before, I would never say something like that x.x

  19. lol this picture gives a new element to potty mouth! LOL

we grew up with Corporal punishment in South Africa. But that was the way of the 70's. I swore at my teacher once and got a strong talking to and luckily spared the paddle.

A letter was sent home and I got the good old Ivory soap treatment instead with the final effect of scrapping my teeth with the bar at the end. Uhgggg

You'd think it would stop us from being fowl mouthed, but no...Mum always seemed to have a fresh bar laying around the house and you bet she used them. I think she baught it in bulk.

Now that I think about it, I'd rather have the paddle. I remember that soap taste in my mouth for hours. It was aweful!

School was good in part of the teachers and had some wonderful inspiring ones. In the 80's it was a turbulant time with many changes but there were always events and people that made them special.

  20. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG! I love these "different" ways of teaching, of course, this one is hilarious effective hahahahaha I teach too (I teach english), but I teach teens/adults, so I can't forbid my students to curse, since most of them are older than me :P
I also remember my time at school, my first friends, my first teacher... But I still like studying, of course! I study at college, and an example why I like it so much happened today.
I woke up in a bad mood, cursing (Oh, the toilet xD) and a little mad at my family, I went to college, started studying, chatted with my friends, and at the end of the class I was completely restored to my normal funny mood! Seems like studying has a magic on it, leaving on us, besides knowledge, a feeling of peace with yourselves that we'll certainly miss when we don't have it anymore.

Have a sweet night and a very nice day, Anette! ^^

  21. Hi Anette! well, that sounds like something really gross. In the school were I studied my first years they were more drastical, whenever someone cursed, he or she gained a ticket to the bathroom and they literaly washed his/her mouth with soap. I don't have too many happy memories of my first years at school, but now I do have some happy memories =)

    Take care!!

This way we could stop to bother Anette and still talk... :)
Although it's not perfect, it's not too bad for me (and i have to say that Anette's comfortig message helps a lot to feel better)...
I saw your pic on your blog profile, and i have the same NW shirt! I love it, it's really a beautiful one (and i was lucky to found a seller on priceminister who sold it all new for cheap)... And i have to say, you really look gorgeous. :)
And for the things i've asked to Anette, i have to say that i was quite scarred to ask them (and most scarred about her reply - or so far the no reply), to the point of having shakky hands. But in the same time, you could say i feel comfortable with her, since i asked this despite feeling like this... And i use the word "friend" on purpose, BTW. Because that's how i think about Anette, a friend - and so far she fits the description....
Hope i'll hear from you soon :)

@Anette: sorry for posting. At least, now you know my thoughts (and i still cross my fingers that you will reply, at least for the first question)... :)

  24. Hi Anette,

so you call hanging with the head over the toilet and cursing "good memories"? ;) That sounds cynical. But well, we have sometimes teachers who we like even if they do strange things. My first teacher was my first big problem. She was just in that time having a divorce- struggle with her husband and her nerves weren't the best (today I know but I did not understand that then). She shouted a lot and was even unfair to some of our classmates. In fact she had destroyed some things that belonged to my classmates just because they were playing with that. I found this so unfair that always in the breaks I stood outside and was cursing her (but said it to myself -unfortunately half loud). Classmates heard that once and told her. So my parents had to come to school. They told me that she had said to them that she knew I was right with my critique in that point but she could not tell me that in front of the class for she might lose her face then. That was really a strange situation. Later on it happened to me that I accidentally had knocked somthing over in class - after several others had already knocked that over and she had been shouting- and I got a real panic attack because of that. I really had the feeling not to get air anymore, I nearly couldn't breath and ran out of the school. In third grade we got a new teacher who was very severe and most of my classmates hated him. I loved him for he had better nerves and tried to be fair.
Well, think this early experiences influence us quite a lot. I still have really big problems if someone deals unfair- no matter if boss or not. And still I open my mouth in such situations- even if it sometimes leads to uncomfortable situations for me later on.
Well then, have a nice day Anette!
    Yours,
    Lisa

If I do that with my students, I lose my job immediately! huahuahu We are not allowed to do ANYTHING with our students here in Brazil.. They can call us names, hit us, do whatever they want to and the only thing left for us is asking them to stop.. Otherwise, the principal would never leave us alone, the parents would say that it's an agression.. oh my.. it's really difficult...

    Oh O.O Thats a unique feature :)
good my first class teacher didnt had this idea ;)
i would have been with my face in the toilet for the 3 years ;) cause i cursed a lot, when i was young...
I had a wonderful teacher too. he was my main teacher in 5th and 6st class.
My GoD! his name was...hold on...FIDEL RABONG!
Not only his name was crazy...he was crazy too! he looked like Beethoven! (and thats no joke)
he was such a kind person, always totally correct with us kids. and when he saw that one of us was going down or fell behind, he took his time and helped as good as he could.
YOu know i was always a idiot in math,
but mr. rabong, got me into math so good that i turned out with an "C (3)" at the end of 5th and 6st class :)

He was a great teacher, and the funny thing is. he knew my dad! he was my his teacher when my dad was in the 9th class. But my dad wa a rat ass at school ;) so he was suprised that the son of Peter is not a rat ass too ;)

God! Sorry Anette for writing so much here.
your post was so cool to read and like a reminder to me.
Hey Thank you! you brought back those good memories of Mr Rabong to me :)

  29. Dear Anette,

in primary school my mum also used to help me almost every afternoon with my homework. Everything was so easy when she was sitting beside me and we were discussing everything together...I miss that time ....

I find your teachers anti-cursing method really good!
My primary school teacher was also a very kind and nice person and I also have a lot of great memories from that time!
Once in 3rd grade we went on a trip and we were playing football girls and boys all together. I missed a goal, so I got very angry and started cursing aloud and all my classmates were so shocked, because I was the most well-behaved kid from my class....after I realised what I did I got scared, because I was sure they were going to tell her, but then they didn't tell my teacher anything!

Nowadays in high school it's also forbidden to curse, so if a teacher hears you cursing wether he makes a speech about education and manners or he threatens with a bad mark...

I always liked going to school and I like it now too, because most of our teachers are okay.....well some of them are really boring or unfair or they expect us to be perfect at their subject and some of them are really severe, so we are a bit afraid of them, but all in all it's okay!
Of course there are teachers and subjects we just want to forget about.....because they are awful!
The most I like my german teacher. She is a wonderful person. We get along very well, I am allowed to call her on her nickname, we talk about all kinda things and she is like a good friend to me!

    Have a nice day!

    Love,
    Herta

  30. I wish I had such a nice teacher. My grandfather was a very profane man, and I learned many curses from him at a young age without knowing any better. I was in a special higher level reading class when I was little, and when I said the words he taught me, totally without knowing anything was wrong with it, they threw me out of the class and wouldn't let me back in even after my parents appealed. So yeah, I wish I had gotten to just stand over a toilet instead :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh, that's terrible toilet! :D

I don't remember much about my first teacher. All I remember is that she was quite nice sometimes but then again she was unpleasant too. I was a little bit afraid of her even though she wasn't scary or anything. Maybe my afraidness was just pure respect towards to her :D
Now when I'm grown up and I have seen her in the street she has always said me hi very much smiling.

I remember my second teacher, and she was like a blessing from the heavens! :D She was younger than the previous teacher and all the girls in the school agreed that she was also very pretty. Unfortunately she quit in our school too soon and when she moved to teach into another school I remember that I sent her christmas card. And I tell ya that it's the only x-mas card I have ever sent to a teacher.. :D

  32. Did it work Anette?? :)

School is a funny thing - I really liked it until I was 11 then it all went down hill. I was really skinny so got bullied a lot by both girls and boys which was a bit weird (usually only girls bully girls) anyway as the years have passed I have started to look back at my school days fondly - they now have a bit of a rosy glow in my memory and the memories of being bullied have faded to almost nothing. Time has a strange soothing effect on memories...
    PS: I love that toilet!!

  34. Hi A -

I always like to use 'Perkele' although not sure how rude it is ?? Apologies if I upset anyone. Think it is something to do with the Finnish God of Thunder??
It is always OK in England as no one understands anyway.

Anette - I was wondering if you would be following the Winter Olympics at all ? A girl (Kasja Bergstrom)where I work is representing Sweden in the Curling.
I have been following her blog where she said on the flight from Stockholm to Chicago she sat behind 'Maria' from the Swedish T.V show Svenska Hollywood Fruar which was funny.

  35. 0h gosh, Alexander McQueen is dead... Ye was found today at 10 a.m. in his house on Green street, West End. It was said that he commited suicide - God, he was only forty! Some people say it was because of drugs...'m all in tears, completely stressed and shocked. He was my favourite designer, best of the best, what he was creating was my style, my taste, my understanding of the world. I hoped so much that in few years I'll be able to buy an Alexander McQueen dress myself...
I could have never thought that this brilliant crazy collection was going to be his final bow.
I will never believe that this man had done everything that he could have done in this world. God, if i only had power to bring him back... And no one helped him.
I have no words, I'm so really sorry. He's irreplaceable, he was the one. He was the genius in fashion.
Now I'm trying to find some new details, but anyway it won't help. It's not like "R.I.P. Johnny Depp" on Twitter, that was written on the new agency's site. I cannot believe, I... That's so...
