Well, now I got that off my chest;=)
Today its the first advent sunday and the city celebrates this with lots of activities like crowning this years Santa Lucia. Many years ago I was in that competition and it was a very nice ceremony. In Sweden we celebrate Lucia on december 13. The lucia cortege sings different well-known songs and we eat special buns called "lussebullar" and also small cakes called "pepparkakor".

Jag tycker julstämning är sååå mysigt i Sverige, en av de få sakerna jag gillar med landet faktist...men Lucia sångerna börjar gå mig på nerverna, haha...
Drygt med internet ibland alltså...vi har massa problem med våran router hemma, men modemet funkar som det ska...nej, tekniken jävlas alltid med en!

ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your internet problems, I know how frustrating it must be. I'm using a cable too, but that's because I'm not keen on wireless (and also because I can't seem to get it to work with my laptop).
Thanks for sharing all the Swedish Xmas traditions. As you may know, I love Sweden and have in the last few years visited often. If it wasn't for my brother moving over there, I may have never got the chance to see this beautiful country. I wish I could live there too. Who knows, maybe one day I will.

ReplyDeleteIt's such a pity that in Russia even Christmas isn't celebrated by all people. New Year is, but not Christmas. And there's no such special sense of a holiday, of a feast. You just know that yes, it will be New year in few weeks, and the city gets some big and mostly false firtrees, lights, and the windows of the shops are covered with decorations... But you can't feel that something special is going on.
That's why I love these foreign celebrations with magic around it. Do you have a feeling of something magical when Christmas comes to town?

ReplyDeleteMy Internet provider is quite good and all the failures happen seldom... but when they do, it always happens only when I need the internet the most - when I prepare for my exams in the university, when I'm sitting ill at home and have nothing to busy myself with or when I'm waiting for important email to be sent. Seems like the company that provides me with the internet is full of insidious and evil-minded people (psychics at the same time, I suppose) who just want to do harm to me :D
About the holiday - we don't celebrate Santa Lucia here, in Russia, but I'm sure it's very nice and heartwarming holiday =)

I know the feeling, it's so annoying when the computer or the net doesn't work. I actually study computers now in yrkeshögskolan, so I hope I will be able to solve that kind of problems when my computer doesn't work.

We are on Virgin now & it is a huge improvment from t-mobile!!

Man.. I understand you.. I really hate when I need the internet and it's not working too.. Usually, the problem is not with the internet guys, but with my brothers.. They mess with the settings and stuff and always fuck up the internet for me. then I have to call them and they'll tell me how to fix it and everything. but it's a pain!!

ReplyDeleteI think that it is little bit ridiculous, if we have in this IT era problems with internet. I am angry, when I start pc and I want to do something on internet and...No service available..So calls and always the same...
Here, in Slovakia we celebrate Santa Lucia and it is called night of witches. It is said that this time all witches have reunion on crossroads. It is tradition to make love-magic.Young, single women are together and they write name of their "love"on pieces of papers and then put it to hat and their are picking up them till Christmas and the last name who will remain is the name of future husband...Another one is copper tradition. It is hard for me to explain cause I know just the result... The shape of the copper in the water tells of the future job of your husband.
Miriam said that they, in Italy, give to children some candies or money.
We do so, but on 6th of December. We called this day Mikulas ( dedo mraz - Grandfather Frost or saint Nicolas)He is always comes with one angel and one devil...and children have to earn candies. They sing, say poems and so on ...and parents give to children candy and fruits into their boots and if the children are bad they receive piece of coal.
I think it is enough about our traditions...

ReplyDeleteI understand you, some time ago we used to call the telephone company many times a month to complain about the service. They had lots of complaints everywhere and ended up with a problem with the Administration of Law.
Now the service is better, it doesn't get so bad as it used to get, but it is still so expensive.

People celebrate differents events according to their cuture here in Brazil, well I am not into it since I don't celebrate nothing, but all this end-of-year mood make me feel warmer.

Åh, jag minns när jag var Lucia på jätteluciakonserten körerna i Kyrkan här brukar ha. Det var verkligen jätteroligt och spännande. Det endra problemer är att den där kronan väger så sjukt mycket. Iår ska jag inte delta i något Luciatåg vilket är synd, men jag får följa Lucia på TV istället.

Christmas. But my friend is Jewish and I have
celebrated a few holidays with her.
The differences are very interesting.

holiday? If that makes sense...?

Woah, is it so close to X-mas they're celebrating Santa Lucia already? O__O Here in Finland the Lucia day is Dec 13 (or something like that) -- anyways, it's creepy how time flies! I think Summer was here just yesterday and now it's almost X-mas already!
ReplyDeleteHeh, I know the internet problems... I have wireless too and it gives me trouble every now and then and pisses me off to no end because I _pay_ for it and I _need_ it for my job every day. The good ol' wired version was far more trustworthy but of course this "net stick" is easy to take with you to travels and so...
Whatever -- modern technology, duh :p Heh, I work in the field of technology myself (unfortunately :p) but couldn't be less interested in the latest computer or mobile inventions -- it's enough for me that what I pay for works when I want it to work and how I want it to work... ;)

It was my favourite time of the year when I was a little child! Usually we got some gifts, it was my grandma's birthday and even her.. how to say this in Swedish.. hm.. namnsdag I believe.
ReplyDeleteI usually wrote little nursery rhymes and read them aloud before opening the gift, and then there were candies.. well.. even if I'm a grown-up, I still get some candies.. ahah!
Too bad to hear that about your internet connection though. I had a similar problem once - it was not working and they didn't fix the problems for two months.. I had to pay two months of connection, while I couldn't connect at all! grr, sometimes hearing these things ruin the day..
I hope they'll come really soon because it's unfair to pay for a service if it doesn't meet the promised standard..

ReplyDeleteOh, I also hate it to have no internet. Nowadays one does so much things with it. I just can not imagine to live without the net any more. If you have a question one can google it, if you have a job or if you are in university as I am, information is sent by e-mail or on the students-server. So net is needed nearly everywhere. So I hope very much your computer will work soon again very well!
I only heard of celebrating St. Lucia in Sweden. There is no other country celebrating this day, is it? So Sta. Lucia is a special swedish thing. Has the Lady something to do with the country? -Sorry, but I really do not know much about that custom.

Now I'm seeing the girl with the candle-crown on her head, I remember when I was in primary school and I read a page of my books that told us about different Christmas traditions in many countries. I remember a picture of a girl with that candle-crown. Like I said, so many good memories... :)

Oh by the way! Almost forget about it. I hate my internet connection too. I'm with Telefonica (maybe you've heard about this company, also called O2) and I'm supposed to have 10MB of speed, but I only (and hardly) receive 3MB, it's a con! I wish Spain was more ready for high speed Internet. But well, I think everyone around the globe isn't 100% happy with their Internet, lets wait for more technological advance and see if they get better at this.
