Had a good nights sleep but could have done some more hours, but with the early rising I get the nice and lovely sunshine through the windows and that is making up for some more hours of sleep;=)
Today its a bit cold outside this morning, only 2 degrees but it will rise I am sure. My son has easter break and the coming weekend its time to paint eggs and eat easter food. We also give away filled eggs and usually its filled with candy and a gift.
We also put up easter things, like "påskris" which is an easter tree. Kids also dress out to be easter witches and easter bunnies.
We eat easter food which is almost the same as we eat at x-mas, but of course more eggs;=)

In South-Africa we eat hotcross buns-its a cinnamon bun with a cross on it. We also hide the eggs and then the kids have 2 find them. Me and my mom spoke yesterday about easter. I dont know if its just here but the choclate eggs are so expensive!!! In some places its R80 for a small(hollow) egg. I dont how much that is in your money but its becoming unaffordable.

Russia surely celebrates Easter, as an orthodox country (actually the name orthodox is wrong, but it's named like this in the world), and we have a great holiday, many people take part in it. I live nearby a beautiful little church, and soon people will be coming there to sanctify the Easter cakes. Now I hear the song of the mass from my window.

Here in Holland we celebrate Easter as well. Not a lot of differences with Sweden though. Although the children will have a long weekend instead of a vacation. People are eating Easterfood, which offcourse is not different then what we eat with Christmas, but families are together eating a lot of eggs ;-).

Hi Anette. Oh, well Easter. In my country most of the girls hate this time, cause we have here really sweet tradition. But let's start from the beginning. On Easter Day ( Sunday ) a lot of people are in church, cause here is the tradition of Pasca. they bring Easter food.( Pasca-kind of bread, ham, eggs,horse-radish and another kind of bread, but I can't remember how they call it and there is one red vegetable called cvikla)and priest bless the food. Then there is a great breakfast with family members eating this food.We in our family greet each other "Chesus Voskres" ( Jesus raised from dead)and the answer "Voistunu voskres" ( Yes he did)

Here is the tradition of "oblievacka a sibacka ". Boys come with a bucket full of water and they throw this water on you. So you are totally wet. And then they take the stick from willow thin branches and they hit girls' bottom several times and after it, we "girls" are giving them eggs, money and lot of other things.

Here we celebrate easter too: eggs and chocolates hidden for the kids and for those into traditions, adults will eat lamb. Most of the time, now, it's just a better meal than usual... Oh, and it's chocolate for everyone too. :p

In my little mainly catholic German village here it is usual to go to church on easter with the whole family. The church is never as full than on eastersunday. Easter is called the highest christian holiday and taken very serious as this here (well, my family and I usually don't go to church but that is really unusual here).
Little children can seek hidden eggs or presents on meadows in the woods or just into the houses. If one becomes older one usually does not get easterpresents any more- depends on the family. What we also do here is color eggs and eat a lot of them during easterdays. We also sometimes eat easterlamb either as a cacke (in a lamb-shape) or as real animal. How people celebrate easter is very free choice of the families here. Usually, if it is good wheather families have a long walk outside in the nature after lunch. We don't know that costume-thing in my part of Germany.

ReplyDeleteWell, in here Easter starts with Church (I don't go to there as I don't really believe in Christian God), then, after Chruch, family gathers around the table(usually all family, not only Nuclear), we break eggs to see who's egg is strongest (the owner of strongest egg will have the best year). After that, we eat Easter breakfast and go to visit friends, to whom we also give eggs (the real, decorated ones).

ReplyDeleteHere in Spain the egg tradition and all that is not usual. Here the Easter is a very very religious and catholic time. Instead of Easter, we call it more often (word by word) Holy Week.
Before this week, we've been kind of celebrating what we call ''cuaresma'' (period of 40 days). In the cuaresma, we can choose wheter to eat meat on fridays or not, I choose not to eat it for respect to the tradition and the catholic religion, but it's not obligatory to avoid eating meat.
Then, specially this next weekend, we mourn Jesus Christ's death and ascension to Heaven with God. With that, we go to the church for the mass and then we watch in the streets the famous Processions, it's kind of a parade, but slow, with religious music (some of them are in a deep deep silent), with some people carrying a ''float or carriage'', it's some thing with wheels and religious statues on the top representing the last moments of the life of Jesus.
This is usually at night and people find peace and redemption with all of this, it's a time for all to repent and change for good.
And this is how 'Easter' or 'Holy Week' happens in Spain =)
Apart from that, I'm glad you're ok and I hope this day will go perfect for you and everyone else.

ReplyDeleteIn the UK we have lovely chocolate Easter eggs (great for a chocoholic like me!). I celebrate a very English Easter because I was born here, but my parents are Greek so my mum usually boils real eggs and dyes them red. There are also some cheese cakes and stuff which I don't like at all, but my mum doesn't make these, she buys them.
I'm not at all religious so for me it's just another day really, but Mum sometimes goes to church when it is Greek Easter (Greek Orthodox Easter sometimes falls at a slightly later date than normal Easter).

ReplyDeleteI'm from Portugal, and I don't know if this is tradition in other countries, but in here, on Easter Sunday afternoon, the local priest goes out on the streets, to each home so people can kiss the cross. It's the people's choice to open the door to the priest or not.
How I celebrate it... It's kind of like Christmas evening, but on an afternoon, I think. At least, that's what I think, I also spend it in family... But maybe the amount of food is smaller on Easter...

I wish everyone in my family believed in God. My sons and I are the only ones. So on Easter, I will be working, hatching humans, not baby chicks. I will probably cook something yummy for my peeps at work because we have no cafeteria at night and the restaurants will be closed. A big roast that I can travel easily with...since I commute to work.

But I really prefer Christmas, it's more joyful and it kinda reunites and brings happiness to all the family, but this is me.

ReplyDeleteIn Poland Easter is very important holiday. As you may know we are very catholic country.
On saturday we go to the church to bless food - eggs, sausages, bread, butter and spices. We put it in easter basket.
On Sunday we eat special breakfast with family. We eat beetroot soup with eggs and sausages. Then go to the church.
After that we can visit our family and friends. Usually we sit at the table and eat so yummy dishes.
Monday is our fun day. But it's no fun when you don't like water couse we referring to traditional pranks involving water. It's called Dyngus Day so it means anything else like "wet monday".
Of course we also paint the eggs. In Poland in some part my country it's a traditional art.

Hey Nettie, I know what you mean about the extra sleep, I so need some extra sleep too. My doc had to up my anti-depressant tabs(I have post-natel depression again) and they've left me feeling sleepy. ReplyDeleteItaly is a catholic country, so Easter is a very important festivity (maybe the most important).
In these days, like every year, a priest goes around the city, blessing houses one by one.
For kids there's the traditional easter egg, a chocolate egg with a little surprise inside.
A traditional sweet food is the Easter Dove: it's like pandoro or panettone, but dove-shaped precisely. However celebrating Easter changes from family to family (depends on traditions).
And there's also Via Crucis and other celebrations... I think I'll probably pass Easter at home... Easter holidays are coming!

We eat a LOOOOT of candy here on Easter.. }Chocolate, lollypops, peanuts covered with suagr.. There are a looot of candies :) And the chocolate eggs are something really special for us

ReplyDeleteIn Croatia , families are coing to church. From Wednesday to Saturday we do note at meat. On Thursday , we are going to church , reading the Bible and remembering Jesus's last dinner. At Friday , people are going to church when it's a Croos trip. The preist is putting a little statue of Jesu sin a grave. You can not hear church bells in those days. At Saturday at 11 pm , people come to church again and everyone waits Easter. At Sunday morning the Preist blesses the food which people brought to church. The first meal at Sunday morning is blessed eggs and ham , especially Croatian product called pršut , which is really , REALLY yummie.
I always get a little present for Easter. Last year , I got Pendulum necklace :3 (yay)

ReplyDeleteBrr, 2 degrees... It's 12 degrees here now, but it's raining cats and dogs and it's very dark here. Not very nice weather, I mean, it's spring! So I want temperatures around the 15 degrees and a lot of sun, like it was two weeks ago...
About Easter: I live in the Netherlands, and we don't celebrate it very much.
Most of the Christian people go to the church on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, so do I. We eat some chocolate easter eggs, and little children paint eggs and stuff like that.
Best of all: coming Friday and next week Monday we're free from school. :)

The US celebrates Easter, there's
usually an Easter egg hunt at the
President's house for the children who
live near him. But every
family is different in what they do.
In my family, my grandma wants us all
to go to church in the morning.
Then we have an Easter lunch together as a
family, this year it will be at my house.
But usually we hide eggs in the grass
outside, and let kids go find the eggs filled
with candy and money before we eat.
The older kids usually don't go easter egg
"hunting", but get some other kids of gift.
We hard-boil real eggs and then
paint them with different decorations,
so that we can eat those too.
But this year we're eating ham,
baked beans, potato salad, veggies,
deviled eggs, pickles, cheese cubes,
pudding cake, pie, pop, juice, and chips.
And we're baking fresh bread.
Because usually we make homemade pizza,
but since we aren't this year, we still
wanted to have fresh baked homemade bread.

Here, in Romania, we paint the eggs and there is also some cake that we call "cozonac" and it is real yummie( looks like bread with chocolate^^) and some other strange food called "drob" which is made of livery and eggs and some other bird and pork organs. Inspite the fact that it sound horrible it's really delicious ;=)
ReplyDeleteIn the Easter Night we go to the church and some people stay there till morning, but some just to light their candle because it's said that the light from the priest is somehow holy and we have to bring it in our houses and not extinguish it.

I can't describe how Easter is celebrated here since Brazil is a huge country, but here where I live I can't see all the traditional thing. There are eggs everywhere; people play Mystery Friend, a kind of Secret Santa, where they randomly give and receive chocolate; Easter food, chocolate eggs... I think that's all. But there are also the religious celebrations, which is more traditional, but I'm not really into it.
I have to say that I love the chocolate part. :)

ReplyDeletemy familiy and I usually don't go to church but on easter sunday, church begins at 5am in the morning and its so a solemn and great atmosphere when priest and altar server take the easter fire in the dark church and the candlelight comes from behind to ahead and the church is only lighted with candlelight. (waah difficult to write such things in english :D)
apart from that: kids searching easter eggs and other small gifts ;)
the part with the costume and the witch (halloween? :P) doesn't exist here in germany.

ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about the allergy you had, I've been away from Internet for a couple of days since I have a jerk of a computer which has problems all the time and could only read about it now. I sure hope all the itching and the symptoms are away by now so you can enjoy these beautiful spring days and the Easter celebrations.
Those traditions sound interesting, didn't know kids were dressing up as witches for Easter too! And the filled eggs as well, we don't have those here in Romania, only ordinary chocolate eggs or bunnies from stores, which we give to kids.
Here we have a more religious dimension for this feast, people go to church in the Easter night and come back with their candles lit from there and as I am a muslim, I don't go but I watch them come back at midnight and it's such a pretty image to see so many lit candles on the streets, in the dark. And then we have a traditional pastry called "cozonac", which is filled with nuts or cocoa cream or turkish delight (like this: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_X_YNvtG8xOo/SzM3pwH8EvI/AAAAAAAAAsI/RHsUqqgrRl4/s640/cozonac.jpg ) and painted eggs. Usually at the countryside people go to their neighbors and take a few eggs or some wine as an Easter present and it's all nice and intimate. And above all, Easter is not as commercial as Christmas, but hardly everything is anymore. =)

Here in Hungary we celebrate Easter a bit similar to Sofia Jana's. On Eastermonday the boys "water" the girls, so we won't "droop" :) In the last century the girls were dashed over with real cold water, but today the boys use mainly Cologne-water. On Eastersunday (and mainly also on Monday) we go to church. On the 3 big Christian feasts comes a theological student to the church and he/she preaches. It's a practice for them.
The traditional dishes are egg here too, and boiled ham. And lots of caces of course :)

Every night(except the Saturday!In Thursday , Friday and Saturday , we can´t eat meat!) we have a procession , they go out from every church of the city...They are very emotional!

Heh, here in the Netherlands we eat eggs quite much.. We have the friday and monday off from school (Thank god! Saves me one lesson of Spanish :P) And we have an easter-fire in many places =D

ReplyDeleteIn Czech republic is Easter very similar to Easter in Slovakia, which has already described here Sofia Jana. But we dont wear folk costumes.
Christians goes to church, because they celebrate resuscitation of Jesus. And the others just relax.
On Easter monday boys go to girls and swish them with a wicker stick on their bottom.
It is not to girls get dry in the next year (get dry = dont have a boyfriend) or be ill.
And for it boys get painted eggs, cookies,.. but in my region they get usually slivovitz (plum brandy), so it is funny when come to you some guys, who pass several houses :-D

ReplyDeleteIn Hungary we celebrate Easter, too. Have some traditions, like the bunny and the eggs - kids have to find them.
And we have a special thing: boys go in the morning and water the girls. It wasn't so funny, because the water was cold, and boys used a big bucket. But nowadays they use parfume. :) (Funny boys use water guns, too. :P )
Here you can find a video about this water ceremony. Boys are in traditional hungarian clothes and tell "watering poems". After the poem they ask: may we water? You should say yes. :)

Swedish Easter sounds way more interesting than English easter! Here we just give each other chocolate eggs and sometimes do treasure hunts, but there's no dressing up or anything. I have a two week holiday from school, but I have to study loads I have some really important exams coming up.

ReplyDeleteWell here in Brazil on Easter time we basically enjoy Good Friday,since it's a holiday and on Easter Sunday,family and friends exchanged chocolate eggs,after eating lots of good food! And if there's any children at home,we do the traditional nest for the Easter bunny with a carrot and a glass of coke on saturday night (when I was a kid, my mother helped me to do this every year! rs) and then, on Sunday morning, they wake up in desperate search of eggs and candy! It is always great!

My family and I don't really celebrate Easter all that much. We just go to church, and have an easter egg hunt in the yard. :) It's mostly for my benefit, because since I'm 14, I obviously don't get invited to other easter egg hunts. :( And of course, I get candy and presents, so that's always fun. :)

well, we in Croatia have some catholic preparations etc. , for example, we take food for sunday breakfast on the saturday to church to be blessed, hm, cooked ham is on the menu, kids take painted eggs to friends and they "battle" with them- knocking lightly one egg against another, and if your egg breaks, you have to eat it :)

ReplyDeleteEaster is always an exciting day for us. we have been adopted into our neighbour's family for nearly every holiday we cannot go home and will have dinner with them. This year is special because it will be our last Easter here before we move back to South Africa. Deelia and Markus have treated us like their children and given so much to us. I will miss them terribly and even though I am so happy about the move, there are many people I will miss.
This whole travel thing sucks big time and really want this to be the last time. I have been all over and lived in 5 countries. Not quite as like touring, but setting up house, having to sell and move again is well... hard. Now with a kid, so many of his things have to go and he is upset.
So... there will be lots of eggs to colour, a big egg hunt at church and MR. Bunny is making an appearance at the hosp my husband works in.
Lot's to do this weekend to make things fun.
In South Africa there really is no difference than here in Canada. Just different season change, going into fall and lots of good food and chocolate after church. Also never missed the The Rand in Jozi.
I'm surely happy to be leaving the snow and cold behind. Nothing like a summer holiday during christmas time. I'll take the SUN any day.
I once stayed in your very own country in a town called Mariestad for a summer in the late 80's as an exchange. Strange thing, I must say...my family were Swedish but their two sons were Korean. Adoptees obviously, but they were very humble and so kind people. We had a lot of roudy times! LOL Spent a lot of time at the lake camping and playing lots of dirt bandy. I had a great time back then.

Hi Anette, sorry for not post yesterday but i was ill, i had headache and sick. I was sleeped all the day. Now i feel better. Yes, here in Italy celebrate Easter. The breakfast it's with salty pizza, sweet pizza, salami. Here too we have eggs easter and i hope to get some of it. Have a nice day dear Anette and take care! Hugs
ReplyDeleteIn france, Pâcques is sunday, and we haven't school monday. the parents hide chocolate eggs in the garden and the children run in the garden to find them, it's very funny but it's necessary to pay attention not to forget it^^ I hope that you like the chocolate. there isn't a witch ar a tree for this day, just henss or rabbits in chocolate. have a beautiful Pâcques!!
ReplyDeleteI forgot to write that for breakfast we eat salami (soppresciata a tipical easter food), blessed eggs. For lunch eat lamb, baked lasagne and fried artichokes. 2 degrees? Brrrr! Here now there is a wind but if were not there it would be temperate weather. Finally today i could eat normally! Yesterday i couldn't to eat nothing, i lied in my bed all the day and cold sweating. This morning i woke up without headache and i felt another person. Headache it's terrible!

ReplyDeleteyesterday in the morning there were also only 3 degrees, but then at midday it went up to 24 and it was so sunny and wonderful!
I stayed outside for about 3 hours and then in the evening I realised that I got sunburn especially on my face ...it was a totally unexpected surprize!
Well Easter is fun! Here in Romania the most people are orthodox or catholic, but we are protestant and we celebrate as the other part of the family and our friends.
It's not popular but we also do the Easter tree with all kinda nice things on it and we also eat almost the same things as Christmas, only more eggs.
We paint lots of eggs and on Eastermorning me and my sis go egghunting in the garden...it's a competition between us and the winner is the one who finds more eggs.
We recieve chocolate egss and bunnies and some kinda present.
And as others have said before on Eastermonday boys and men go "to water" the girls and women so they won't "droop" and in return we offer them a nice painted egg.....I like it because friends and family are coming to visit and we have a great time ...but at the end of the day I smell terrible from all the perfumes they "water" me with.
I think it's really cool that in Sweden kids dress as witches and bunnies,I haven't heard of it before.
My Easterbreak starts tomorrow and I'm so happy!

We celebrate easter, mostly with some nice food.
I live in a town called 'Kruishoutem', it's a egg-town. So each Easter they celebrate this: you can become egg-queen or egg-farmer (many people laugh with this when I tell them :D), the egg-queen is some kind of beauty competition + you have to know lots about 'Kruishoutem' and eggs ;) You also have to do a little act like singing, dancing, doing something with eggs... :) And the egg-farmer is mainly knowledge about the town and eggs. And also a little act.
The Eastercelebration takes a whole weekend: from friday till mondaynight. And the weekends before and after they organise a few small things.
And every year their is a climax, it's called: 'De eierworp', wich means 'the eggthrow'. They hang a long cable from the churchtower untill the town hall. And then they hang an easterclock on that cable that unloads with eggs with parachutes. Not real eggs, but plastic ones. And in that egg you can find a little note with the price that you have won when you catch that egg. The prices are: 3 euro, 5 euro, 25 euro, an eggmeal, a cookbood and one golden egg with 125 euro.
This is actually very funny to watch. People go crazy for an egg :) You know the 'fighting' on metalfestivals that is called 'a pit or pitting'. But this is sooo much worse :) Believe me! Last year I was standing in the crowd, and had some real hard elbows in my face. Above that, the people climb also in the trees, on the road signs, in the fountain, on the buildings if they can... So ofcourse sometimes somebody falls off and then it doesn't look that pretty, with blood and all..
So this is nothing for children, because of the crazy strong men that always want those eggs :)

Here in Spain we celebrate easter of many differents ways, where I live in Valencia we celebrate Easter eating chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies and others chocolates animals xD we have too a tipycal sponge cakes with nuts and raisin and another calls "mona" these are sponge cakes animals and have a painted egg or chocolate egg you can choose the egg, all people goes to the parks to eat and fly them kites

ReplyDeleteWell, we go all days in church(Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and next Monday). On Friday, we read in church Jesus's passion and resurrection. On Saturday we are going to bless our food in church and then, we eat it on Sunday morning! On Sunday, all my family come to us and then, we eat together!
All those days I'm helping my mum to clean all house and we bake some cookies!

Easter witch sounds funny! In Germany we only have a lot of bunnies, lambs, chickens and... well, eggs.^^ I already coloured eggs today with my siblings, cause we're on holidays and go back home on friday, so we celebrate tomorrow, having the family at one place already. So I'm home on sunday and will be able to celebrate with my boyfriend, too. :) What we're going to do tomorrow is to first hide the eggs and a lot of sweets, and then go search for it. Afterwards we'll have a large breakfast and eat as much eggs as we can. :D

ReplyDeleteHowzit Ztephni!...the Rand show is kind of like a huge country fair but in Joburg at the Expo Centre. It's grown big and now has rides, petting zoo, food, shopping vendors, a train and lots of entertainment. It runs for about 2 weeks and usually begins before Easter. It's a popular event, one I can remember my father taking us even when we didn't want to go. But once we got there it was a lot of fun and a holiday trip for us. It was at Milner Park back then. I grew up in PE and left ZA in 1991.
They still have the animal competitions and shows where you can ride horses, llamas and see the jousting which was my fav. There is lots to do with the rides being most fun. Hope you can go sometime. I think you will have a great time.
I hope you are all better now - and ready to enjoy Easter! I have to admit that it is my favourite celebration (even more so than Christmas and that is saying something!!) I just love seeing everything come back to life after the melancholy winter and I know it may sound stupid but there really feels like there is something special in the air around Easter time... As for celebrating it - we very much treat it like Christmas - we decorate the house with flowers and an Easter tree which is sprigs of shrubs from the garden with little eggs hanging from them - I also bake Easter biscuits, bread ect and we give each other eggs. We also do a massive egg basket decorated with flowers and chickens with edible little chocolate eggs in it. In the UK Easter is quite a low key event but its always been a big celebration in our family! :) I hope you have a wonderful (and healthy) Easter Anette :)

Here in France (at least in my family) Easter can be resumed by chocolate, chocolate and then more chocolate.
We don't have special food. But for kids we hide chocolate eggs everywhere in the garden or in the house and they have to find them! We also offer each other chocolate eggs or animals.
For my own each day I'm looking for what I call "chocolate art". For example last year I offered to my mother a mask made of chocolate looking like Venice Carnival mask. It was so beautiful that she didn't dare to eat it at the beggining!!

ReplyDeleteVår familj är galen i traditioner, och har vi inte våra traditioner som vanligt är det helt fel! Vi har en påskträdgård, som består av påskgräs, förutom en "väg" och en tom plats där graven som Jesus låg i ska stå. På påsklördagen står det vakter utanför graven, men på påsksöndagen är vakterna avsvimmade, en ängel står på gravens topp och tre kvinnor går på vägen mot graven.
Vårt hus är pyntat med påskdekorationer och på påsksöndagsmorgonen äter vi ägg (precis som varje veckoslut, men det här är speciellt ändå!).
Till lunch äter vi fisk (lamm går inte på fråga, min syster älskar lamm), och potatis.
Jag älskar julen med stämningen och allt, men påsken är precis lika bra, bara på ett annat sätt. Idag var det strålande vackert solsken, och för första gången i år kunde man gå ut utan rock på! Det kändes underbart, jag har gått och längtat efter våren så länge.
Ursäkta att det blev så långt, jag blev bara så ivrig att skriva om påsken. Jag kanske skriver nåt mer på min blogg, och du är alltid välkommen att läsa den! :)

At Easter here in the country where I live, the church after Mass, the people have a way of gathering the family to eat a fish dish called Bacalhoada the eggs and chocolate gifts.
Cod in the language is called Kabeljauw Netherlands and is a traditional dish of Portugal, which was inherited by portuguese immigrants to Brazil. The cod had an important role in the lives of sailors in the sixteenth century is which was he part of the diet during the trip, after being dried and salted, the fish was kept for years without spoiling.
Today there are several types of revenue and the most common is cod in the oven. To do so, leave it in water for twenty hours quarter changing the water every time to remove excess salt. After cooking in water for five minutes and it mounts on a tray accompanied by boiled potatoes, red bell pepper, onion, slice eggs, olives, green herbs, olive oil, salt. And to finish it, cover with a mayonnaise or cheese and bake in the oven. It's delicious! Including cod Gadus macrocephalus good that is imported from Norway is extremely expensive.
But in the city of my country of origin in the extreme northeast of Hokkaido in Japan, the cod fish is not valued to the here. Their only preserved eggs are served at the table at the end of the year with wishes for abundance and prosperity.
