For those of you who like the belting technique I can give you a perfect example of a singer who masters it so good;=) This is my old favourite song from my late teenage years. I´ve been crying so many tears to this song...hihi!

I think that's one of the techniques my vocal coach plans on teaching me... as well as proper support, which I'm trying so hard to learn quickly. I DO notice that he lifts his shoulders when he takes a breath, which is a no-no. But he does have an excellent voice.

ReplyDeleteWhen i was in my 20's i used to use this technique & found it very natural & easy. Then i went down the path of classical singing after being inspired by Sarah Brightman & decided i would try & do both!! Since i am now 32 i try to do both but it doesn't seem to work!!
If i try the belting technique now i find it hard & i don't know why, something changed in my voice :( & sometimes it even hurts a little....do you have any answers or advice for me???
Iam having lessons again soon just wish i could sing both ways :(
This is why i really admire the way you sing because it gives a really powerful clean cut sound thats filled with emotion & power.
I love it when you sing " 7 Days To The Wolves" when you sing "Light the fire, feast
Chase the ghost, give in".... I seriously got goose bumps when i heard you sing this live.
I used to get really irritated when tarja (hardcore fans) used to say oh Anette she just shouts...id be like no actually the way Anette sings is really hard to pull off especially the high notes!!...Even a nobody like myself i know its hard to do...then i would turn the question around on them & say do you think tarja could sing the way Anette does huh!?!Who said operatic is the only way to go haha :)
Look at cyndi Lauper iam sure she uses the belting technique, amazing voice!
Anyway sorry to babble & dig up the past but i think its important that people know that there is alot of skill to the way you sing!!

Kelly Jane: Hi there! I understand that dilemma since it´s quite usual for classical singers. The technique you use in classical singing opens the passage up to let the note out but when belting you smash the chords together and instead let no air come through the passage. There are classical singers who use the belting technique too so its something everyone can try even if its hard to learn for many. I recommend you to buy the CD and book from Cathrine Sadolin cause in that she explains really good and shows in exercises how to do it. http://www.completevocalinstitute.com/ this is really worth the money;=)
ReplyDeleteFalyssa; Lifting the shoulders etc can work ok as long as he doesnt feel the tension in the throat. He hits every note perfect so whatever he does with the shoulders doesnt matter, I am quite sure he is self-taught and then you dont think about what you are doing but just sing. Sometimes technique is great but its sometimes also to many people who get so "into" the technique instead of just singing the way they want naturally. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteGreat song! I sing as well, and though I use both techniques, I do find it much harder to belt. I keep wanting to buy the book you suggest, but it seems so expensive. And you're right, sometimes people get into the technique too much. But of course, learning the right breathing techniques, etc, is very important.

The voice is the most diffcult instument and the most colourful.

To the Hospital
ReplyDeleteHi Anette ;=( went to the doctor this morning and I will be hospitalized tomorrow early morning..cannot say a lot about my conditions at the moment, because this will be a check up and they will see.
So I want to tell you I will bring my computer there in the hospital (+ a usb mobile device for internet connection) to check your blog til they discharge me and I still dont know when it will happen.
Of course, i will bring my Doctor House Dvd box hihihih so it will stay in the proper place there hihihi...

Steel Heart singer has an amazing voice but, if im not wrong, there are some notes he hits that are out of tune and i don't like.. :D

And when you say Belting, I suppose you mean that you use Edge?
You know, Neutral, Curbing, Overdrive and Edge?
I know that Edge used to be called Belting.

But I love singing. Though I know that I must work hard to sing correctly. My strangest experience was on the 5th of September 2009, when I was standing in the crowd of russian fans (they really rock) and someone asked if smb knew the tune of Thank you for the music (we wanted to sing it for Tuomas, but had no opportunity during the show). I humbly said that I knew. And they said: Sing! I was shocked, because I really feel shy to sing aloud - I know my ear for music is not perfect. But I had to sing, because it was our way to say thanks. They got the words...
Well, finally we all sang very good!;) That was nice and very funny)))
I still don't know what technique to choose but belting seems really interesting to me. But my biggest problem is bad immunity. I always have cold or something like that. I don't know what to do with it! Cold in the head just kills me and my voice too. What do you usually do to recover?

I try to learn singing on my own. I do some exercises to help my breath and voice range grow bigger. I can reach high notes better than the lower ones, which seems a bit weird to me. Sometimes when I sing, I feel pain in my throat, like when I cry and something big restrain me to speak or sing. I don't know why this happens, cause it sometimes happens even in songs I can normally sing without problems. Don't you know the reason? Can you share some technical tips please?:)
Anyway, I've just heard your version of Kuolema Takee Taiteilijan and it honestly made me cry. It was so beautiful and tender!
Two big WOW for you, you have the voice of an angel with so muc power. The second one is for lyrics, I find it hard to remember the finnish words:)
I tried to sing some instrumental versions of this and it wasn't bad, until the last part (Oman taivaan...). That's high as hell!:-D

My singing teachers once told me that belting was not healthy for the voice. So I usually help myself with classical techniques. But now that I am singing in a band I nevertheless have to learn it. But it is not that easy to me. Very impressing that he is so good with that!!!
