Today I have been having a full day and I havent had time to write until now.
I was out walking with the pram for 2 hours and on my way I found a sick rabbit sitting next to a stairway right in the middle of one of the heaviest trafficked road in Helsingborg. I stopped immediately and understood he/she wasnt ok, cause a rabbit not jumping away when someone approaches so close is clearly not ok;=(
Started calling to get a hold of someone who saves or takes care of a wild animal and that wasnt so easy. Stood there in the cold calling the animal hospital for 10 min, just put on hold. Gave up and called the police. Put on hold there too for 10 minutes. Hmm..coffee break everywhere at the same time?;=) then I finally came through and got connected to the emergency aid for wild animals and talked to a nice man. He said: oh, it´s probably the rabbit plague and nothing else to do than put it to sleep;=( So, he sent out a guy to give the rabbit a needle and even if that hurt to know, I felt better knowing that he/she could be put to sleep like that instead of if I hadnt called and someone maybe would have kicked it to death or something.
But let´s send the poor little one our thoughts tonight..

ReplyDeleteI once found a rabbit like this sitting by the side of the road. My Dad nearly ran it over, but I noticed it and got out of the car and tried to make him/her move out of the way but it didn't. In the end I got my coat and picked it up and we drove down to a nice grassy area and put the rabbit there where it was safe from the traffic. It was clear he/she wasn't well either.

I have a pet rabbit back at home, I hope he is okay right now! Especially with all the fireworks this time of year.

At least he's not in pain anymore and is happily jumping somewhere else :)

We had to part with one of the Wolves last week, one of the most difficult days I've ever had. He was very sick and we all knew it was his time. I think he knew too...
I wish there were more people that cared about animals and do something so caring like you did.

Hey Anette, i'm sorry so much for a little rabbit but you did a right thing. It undestand that you are an animal lover and i like this kind of person. Since a bit of time in my garden comes one stray grey cat and we feed him when there is no my dog otherwise she run and woof to him. That cat is very nice and i like so much to caress him.

ReplyDeleteI get so upset when I see animals suffering, it hurts more than when I see people suffer, don't know why. Maybe because those little animals don't have an active voice in our society, so they can't do much to defend themselves from bad humans...
I always do my best trying to save animals, they're my soulmates ;=)
By the way, ,what do you think about famous brands that test their products on animals? I really hate 'em, they are heartless! I completely refuse to buy things from them!
You did the right thing Nettie, it was the best choice for the poor rabbit, 'cause even if you took him and brought him to your house, he woudn't feel happy, he is a wild animal afterall...

Like other people said, you did the right thing. That was really nice of you to stay there so long. It always seems like police are on break, I live by a school in a pretty good area... Kids were on the roof running around with lightning rods on the roof. I called the police and they arrived an hour later. By that time the kids came down because I got sick of waiting and yelled at the kids and they came down. Could you imagine them falling on the lighting rods:( Funny the police came to my door and was annoyed that I called because the kids were not on the roof... Have a great night.

ReplyDeleteI appreciate when someone takes good care of the weakest and you were really good to me showing such an interest in him/her but, I disagree with bumping off a little creature, I've always said "No" to this behaviour. Poor him!
Okey, okey, I don't mean it's good to let him/her die abandoning the pet in the middle of nowhere, but animals have nature, forests, lakes, sea and not the city necessarily.

Hmm there is an awful poison that farmers use here to keep the Rabbits down and it is so cruel, i hate it, Animals should not suffer at the hands of humans!! They are amazing.

I had to help an injured field mouse tonight

My cat came home with a little live field mouse in her mouth this evening (the naughty naught cat!), we tried to get the mouse out from her teeth but she wouldn't let it go and eventually we managed to prise the poor little thing away from her. The little mousey was very injured and was bleeding very badly so we got a neighbour to come and put it out of it's misery as we didn't know how to do it in a humane way ourselves, he had a pellet gun and although it wasn't nice to do he ended the little mouses suffering by shooting it. I know it was only a mouse but to me it is a living feeling creature and deserved to have it's pain ended.

ReplyDeleteI honor people like you who have the courage and strength to do the right thing, my heart goes out to that little creation. You tried by making the right connections and sadly they told you that the little one was already sick and that they couldn't do anything for him. Something similar happened to me when I was outside playing with my son one day. There was a squirrel lying by a tree making squeely noises. It seemed like he had been there for days because he was hardly moving. So I decided to give him some milk and see if any possible energy could come out of him but unfortunately he remained still just making little chirps but managed to drink the milk completely. Finally, we covered him with a small piece of cloth to keep him warm and than I stayed to observe him for a couple more hours to see if he would recoperate but I had retired for the evening. We went back the very next day to check on him but he had already passed away. I completely broke down and cried because I tried to bring him back to life but I couldn't. Some how this little squirrel knew what I was trying to do and the only thing right to do was to let him go. Now he is in a better place. Bright blessings to you and your family.

This is such a sad story... but the less of all evils I think, there is no need on leaving an animal in an unnecesary pain, yours was a very noble action, be blessed!!

Whats with these public servants trying to sabotage your to the RESCUE mission with a 8 hour coffee break...don't they know better, obviously not. And well yes the rest as in put to sleep is sad but with the best interests of the animal in mind and it is done quite happily....with mercy and compassion.

ReplyDeleteI myself adopted a dog I saw in the street. I was in my way to college and saw a group of kids throwing stones in something... When I came near I saw a little dog tied to a tree, bleeding and very scared. Of course I couldn't aloow something like that! So I took the dog to my house. It took a looooooong time, but now he feels extremely ok, its happy and healthy!
But anyways... I feel sorry fot the bunny. Rest in peace, little rabbit... But at least your last sleep was peacefull...

Poor rabbit... At least you were here, and you do something that many people wouldn't. Putting it to sleep was probably the best thing to do for it. Even if i must admit i feel sorry for it, at least it's someone caring who found it...

ReplyDeleteWe used to see these rabbits with this plague (I assume the vet means myxomatosis - although I'm not sure if this is a wild rabbit or no?) all the time in the fields. It is used as a way of culling them, because in the wild they do become a pest (eating and destroying crops and such) but it is a very cruel and slow death. There are far more humane ways of culling and controlling pests, something that does need to be done sadly.
I'm so happy to read that you did something to at least allow this creature a prompt death.
Anyway, I hope that you will have a good day today, the apple cake you made looks very good and the recipe would be easy to make vegan for myself. :D

Oh, poor rabbit! I had rabbits too and they lived a long and chocolate-full life (7 years). So I think it was a nice and right action from your side! :)

Aww, poor bunny. :( I think you did absolutely the right thing. Once a rabbit cathces an illness like that it could get very sick very soon and it's best to put it out of its pain and misery.
ReplyDeleteI have two pet bunnies and in August one got sick. The evening before she was totally OK and the next morning, less than 12 hours later, she had stopped eating and her head was twisted to the right. I took her to vet and they said she has a middle ear infection.
Having balance problems and feeling sea sick she wouldn't eat or drink anything. Bunny's bowel is such that it has to work all the time; if it stops it will paralyze and poor bunny will die soon.
So for a week I had to feed and hydrate her every 1½ - 2 hours night and day with a squirt (luckily I was on sick leave myself!), and of course she fought back hard.
After the week she ate mostly by herself again but still wasn't feeling good.
She had antibiotics for almost two months and her head still wasn't straight so I thought her nervous system was permanently damaged, though she got strong medicine very soon once the first symptoms showed.
Then we couldn't give any more antibiotics but I decided to give her a little time since her appetite and energy was restoring. Then slowly she started healing herself and now she's all fine and greedy again. I can't eat while watching TV 'cause she will leap high to my plate and try to steal the sandwich. ;) Yes, she has miserable table manners, one shouldn't sit on her food... Hehe, my precious one!
But anyway, what you did I think was great. Not many people would bother to take care of a wild animal. You have a big heart. :)

Few times I saved lives of birds and so.. I really love animals.. I had a squirrel in my room.. But it's Degu.. small Andean squirrel.. But he died.. Now I have a dog and parot.. :)

My teacher told us that her dog's tail
got stuck in the door a few nights ago;
the door wouldn't move and she
couldn't get the tail out.
When she finally did, the door ripped
off the last 2 inches of the dogs tail!
She said there was so much blood,
that she had to take it to an animal
emergency hospital. Apparently, the dog had
to get some of it's tail amputated off,
so that it would heal well.
It's sad, but it's the best thing, I guess.
Her dog's fine now though, but she was
really upset and worried for
her dog over these past few days.

ReplyDeleteI have few rabbit at home. This is very weird, but I need to say to you that some of them were sick exactly as this one few weeks ago. I live in Croatia and you in Sweden, so, distance is large! It's some rabbit's disease and we think, here, that it is from mosquitoes, but I'm not so sure. We also put them to sleep! It's very sad! :( When I saw that rabbits I feel terrible! I feel so pity over them! :(
