..yesterday... when I came home from M´era Luna I found my cat Kulan very very ill.... she didnt move, didnt drink, was dizzy and couldnt even jump up into the bed...just lying underneath my sons bed and was very very ill...
So, went to the animal hospital and there I got the devastating answer that she has a severe deathly kidney desease. I got the choice to put her to sleep or that we should start to medicate her which can help and make her live a bit longer, maximum 1 year or so... and we still dont know if she will get better...
I sat there crying with a decision to take her life or not... how can I do that? What makes me decide that? I prayed for a sign to show me what to do and all of a sudden, she comes up really weak and dizzy and goes over to me and purrs...I looked in her eyes and I said: You are a fighter, we´ll fix this!
And it will be so expensive and hard for us all and I am leaving for Stockholm tomorrow and then off for a week so she needs to stay at the hospital until I get home but I feel that I owe her this. She is one in the family and I love her to death... I will do everything I can and then we can only pray that she will be better...
I will tell you more after the veterinarian has called me and let me know more...

This is so sad, but i know exactly how you feel.. Two weeks ago my little dog became very ill, she didn't eat, sleep, play.. So we went to the hospital and over thousands of examinations and they found out that she has 2 diseases from a tick.. and she was also limping, but that was because od a little grass that had stuck into her leg. But fortunately she is almost okay now.. :)

ReplyDeleteOhhh i'm so sorry for you.... hope your cat will be better, i understand your feelings cause i have dogs and i'm worried each time they seems to be not okay.
If there is a treatment for this i think it will be okay, some years ago my dog was very very ill and thanks to the treatment he survived 2 years longer.
It was pretty hard and pretty expensive but it was worthed it.

Oooh, bad new :(. I had the same problem with my dog... ten years ago, but I think about this decision very often. But I know that my dog is happy where he is now.

ReplyDeleteFailing kidneys are a big problem with cats but I am glad that you decided to give it a try and treat her, even though it will be time-consuming and expensive but as you said, they are worth it, because they are your best friend and part of the family. Ending a cat's life without trying to save it if the cat is still feeling a little well would not be my decision either.
I have three cats, too, and would go to nearly all lengths to make sure they are feeling fine. One of my cats is also gravely ill at the moment, she has bone cancer and only a few weeks left to live. But also she is a little fighter and I let her live and enjoy life for as long as she wants to herself and I think that is the key.
We should make their lives as easy and as comfortable for as long as possible but as soon as their suffering gets too much and we cannot treat their pain and discomfort anymore we will have to make the kindest (but hardest) decision there is, to end their misery by putting them to sleep. It is a damn hard decision because you do not want to let go someone you love, you do not want to have to decide about life and death, but we owe it to them - that they have a good life without pain.
Having Kulan in hospital is of course painful because you cannot be with her but at least she is in the best of hands.
So for now, I will light my candle for you and Kulan tonight and my three cats send some kisses and get-better-paws for Kulan, too. Give her some extra love from all 4 of us!

ReplyDeleteawwww, I feel for you and I know what you're going through - one of my cats was diagnosed with a fatal kidney disease about five years ago and he was given six months to live. We decided he would die at home in comfort so we took him off all his medication and brought him home. Five years later and he is roaming around France terrorising the local animals and generally in fantastic health!

ReplyDeleteI know by experience the hard part of it is when they are ill or when you find them dead :'=(
But illness and death are a natural process, the same is for medications= i believe it's a natural thing as well, as i already told you before, we should take care of our body and soul forever, as long as we are simple, wise and sensitive enough to admit they are creatures. I believe God gave us animals/pets to help us all and they deserve great respect.
I'll say a prayer for kulan, send a caress to her for me please and say her i love her :=)
I'm sure you did the right decision also because you prayed to receive a sign;-)

ReplyDeletetyvärr så är jag rätt så van vid sånt här... eftersom våra katter är ute hela tiden så vet man inte vad som kan hända med dom. under en sommar så förlorade vi tre katter, någon blev överkörd, en försvann och en var en kattunge som vi tog till veterinären men han hade kattpest så vi fick avliva honom.
Just nu så har vi två katter och jag skulle bli jätteledsen om dom dog.

Believe me, I understand very well how you feel, since I'm a huge animal lover and I work as a volunteer at some animal aid centers, so I give all of myself to animals. I know it's so hard to take a decision, but I am sure you made the right choice - give her a chance, do all you can to cure the disease and hopefully make her feel better. I know I would do the same.
You know, love is such a powerful healing force. And your love to her can do a lot.
Fight for her and with her as long as it's possible. Be sure that she will be grateful, and by looking in her eyes you'll get the greatest rewarding for what you're doing for her.

ReplyDeleteWe've had to put 2 cats and a rabbit down and it's such a hard decision. But if Kulan can still fight it I hope she can. I really hope she can get better. It doesn't bear thinking about having a pet die so try and stay strong and positive and believe she can fight it.

ReplyDeleteI am so extremely sorry about your cat. My families cat, they had her for 19 years, she got sick, but my family couldn't afford to take her to the vet. She couldn't move, and softly cried for days before passing away. It was terrible!

Oh no :( That is just horrible!! I lost my beloved cat last november. She has been mine since I was 7-years old (I was 20 when she died) and my cat has a... mm... I don't know the real word but when I said breast-cancer you know what I mean :P We operated her once but It didn't get any better and we thought it would be too hard for the cat to be operated the second time so I have to put her in sleep. :( It was so horrible! I have never cried that much and I'm still crying when I'm thinking about it.

ReplyDeleteI'm such an animal lover I sometimes think I'm more attached to animals than humans, so I really feel for you. My friend was in a similar situation a while ago when her cat was diagnozed with cancer -- the cat was a real fighter and lived longer than any expectations but unfortunately, at some point her pains became so severe the only humane option was to give her the final relief from them... :(
Lots of strength to all of you and healing thoughts to Kulan -- I'm sure she'll get the best treatment in the whole country in that animal hospital!

She lost her way to home once, and we couln't find her for days.. I was so broken!
My mom woke me up at 3pm when finnaly our at came to the door ^^
We had also a dog who was very sick, diddn't get up, diddn't drink, tried to eat but it always came out again.. We also looked into his eyes but we could see only pain.. he was 13 years old so he had a very good,long life with us.. There wasn't annything we could do, only watching him dieing in pain...so my mom decided to put him asleep..

But now she´s doing well, jumping arround, fighting me. So what i wanna say is: There is allways a light when everything seems to be dark.

It is hard when a pet gets sick. I have four dogs and when one is sick I am very worried. The truth is that our pets are like children to us and make everything to get them right. I also do not sacrifice my pet. already hear cases in which animals are cured even after veterinarians say that the only way out was sacrificing them.

ReplyDeleteI am so sorry about your cat, Anette. I understand how you must be feeling because I too had a cat that became ill and was faced with the hard choice of putting her to sleep. The vet told me there was nothing she could do for her and it would be better to put her to sleep to end her suffering. It was heartbreaking, but I had to do it. This was some years ago, and I still think of my cat (Suzy) with deep sadness. She was part of the family, and I haven't been able to face getting another cat since. I will one day, but I just don't feel ready yet.

ReplyDeleteI'm so sad to read this. :( I hope she will get better. I know how you feel, my dog nearly died like a month ago. He had an epileptic attack, he fell over, his body started shaking and his head had stuck into the legs of the bench which was standing on the terrace, and when my father woke up to the noise and went out to see what's wrong he found Bruno lying on the ground. He had lost his consciousness, had foam at his mouth and he was barely breathing. :( Luckily my father could save him, and he is still living, but he still has epilepsy. I know that it's not a major problem, because it can happen to humans, too, but it's so scary to see your beloved pet falling over the ground with shaking body. :( So I wish lots of strength to Kulan and you. Everything is going to be allright if you believe in it. :)

I lost my 15 years dog two months ago. I know exactly how you’re feeling.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that I can say to you is, don’t give up, try everything you can. I know it’s hard, but then you can say that you made everything you can. Give her much love and care her until the end. I feel sorry, but is because of this that I don’t know if I want other animal, because when they’re sick, it’s painful for them and for us.

Oh Anette, I'm so sorry. But I definetly think you made the right decision. A few years ago ew almost had to have our horse put down and the vet told us there was nothing that could be done to save him. But we saw the look in his eye that told us not to and 4yrs on he's as fit as he ever was and absolutely wonderful.

going through with that.
My cat Brandi, I had for 13 years since I
was 2 and this happened with her also.
She got really really sick and we
took her to the vet and were told she
had feline asthma, was borderline
dehydrated(she never drank water unless
it was from a tub/sink), and had a tumor.
They said that she would be in a lot
of pain but treatment and removing
the tumor would help her but she would need
a lot of help for the next few weeks
or that we should put her down,
but that either way she would die
within a year or so and the tumor would
probably come back.
And I know what you mean.
When you get so attached it's one of
the family, how can you let them
die without trying to help them?
Well, growing up with this cat I really
really loved her. I knew it could
be painful but I didn't want to let her go,
she was really important to me.
So we got the treatment and she lived
for another two years at least.
I say at least because while we were
moving she went outside(which she was an
indoor/outdoor cat)and never came back. Apparently when a cat is dying sometimes they
run away from home and die outside.
My mum and I cried for a week.
But I know, it's really hard to either
see them suffer or put them down.
It's hard to let them go. But I feel like
I made the right choice. You will too.
You develop a bond with an animal just
like you would a child. If you didn't
do everything you could to help her,
you'd probably regret it because animals
get to be a part of you and your family.
As psycho as my cat Mulder is, and how
much everyone thinks I should get rid of him,
I won't. I've had him for almost a year,
since he was 6 weeks old,
and even though he is crazy, I love him
because he has a sweet side that only I see.
But I believe everything will work out
for the best with you and I think
your cat will do fine.
Animals are known to take after their
owners personality's. So if she's anything
like you- she's strong.

ReplyDeleteI feel for you Nettan, this happened to my cat back in 1998, I may of been a kid but I remember it clearly. Sadly our cat was too far gone for any treatment. You've been lucky with Kulan, you found her in time, I hope your little fighter pulls through this. Give her plenty of hugs from me and give yourself one too, you need it.

I know this will sound so mean. But you really have to think for your cat. She is in alot of pain. a pain that won't go away. I know you love her. As i do my cats but i know if Spike or Mollie were in that much pain i would stop it! I know it's hard but your cat will be more greatful for it.

ReplyDeleteMy cat died 1 year ago from cat's HIV.It was so hard. She was very sick. And it was no cure for her. So i had to make her sleep. It was hardest desicion in my life. But i knew it was for the best. She was suffering so much.

ReplyDeleteI am very sorry to read all this and know how difficult this must be for you. I have been through this twice. The first time we made the decision to try everything possible to cure the cat. The price was something in between € 1,000 and € 2,000 (which is quite a lot of money for us) and we ended up with the cat dying a terrible death. The second time was quite similar to what you have written. One day the cat could not even lift her head to look at us. She did not eat or drink anything anymore either. We brought her to the vet and then there was their answer: "The best thing for you to do is to put her asleep. We can only give her some medication which will get her through the weekend, but there is nothing else we can do for her." The cat was 19, which means that she was even older then I was back then and am now. So we made this terrible decision to take her life. It was that or have her die a few days later with perhaps a lot of pain and suffering.
As an answer to the questions you have been asking yourself, wheter to take her life or not. It is hard and you will feel guilty no matter what you decide. If you keep her alife but she dies anyway and perhaps with a lot of pain, you will feel sorry for not taking her life before. If you do take her life, you will feel guilty for making that decision and not trying harder. How old is the cat? The younger the better the chances of curing her will be. Another thing you can think of when making the decision: am I doing it to safe her or am I doing it because I am selfish? Seriously, this is not an insult to you in any way, but it happens that people keep their pets alife only because they can not let go. It was very sweet to read that she came over to you when you were crying. I think it is a way for your cat to comfort you.
Just because I am curious: does the cat have to stay there for at least a week or is it because you are not at home? Because if she can go home earlier, perhaps your son or your boyfriend / husband can pick her up and bring her back home? Perhaps that is better for your cat. She will be in her safe and comfortable place with people she trusts. If she has to stay with the vets, she is very likely going to be locked up into some cage without being pampered the way you probably pamper her. And it might makes you feel better too, knowing that she is at home with people both the cat and you trust?
Anyway, I wish you, your son and everyone else who loves the cat and of course Kulan herself the very best. Hopefully she will get well very soon!

ReplyDeleteYou know, sometimes it is right to put something out of it's misery and let it die peacefully, without suffering for much longer. But it looks like your cat sensed the decision you had to make and made its own voice "heard".
It seems like you two have a special connection =D.

Poor Kulan - and you too... I also have got a tomcat, named Mikki, and I couldn´t imagine how much I'd do for saving his life. He´s just my little darling, so I understand you =) I truly hope Kulan will be able to get well again!!

Then my friend told me, that his mother (which has had a cancer and it looked she'll be ok) is going to leave us really soon.

Oh, I have just been in a similar situation with my cat, Juno...She's OK now, but she was very, very sick about a month ago to the point where I nearly lost her. It turned out to be totally treatable, though. But I was so stressed out, and so upset...and the thought of losing her was so devastating...Our pets ARE a part of our family. I hope Kulan pulls through!
ReplyDeleteHi Anette, i`ve passed for this some months ago, with my dog. she has 19 years old! and she was very ill, we have to take the desicion if we put him to sleep or we take the operation. with no chances to survive my dog pass excelent the operation and now is safetly and safe. Look i think if there`s a chance that your pet survive, you must give it, the death is sure but the life is the challenge!

I really hope Kulan will recover, or at least will be able to live comfortably for a little while longer. It's great to know you care so much, and my best wishes are with you and Kulan.

Poor Kulan...well I know for sure cats have that desease only whenthey eat a special cat's food like Whiskas or Kitekat..so had my cat but we fixed tha and now it's okay. She had some small stones in her kidney and it was from a cats food. So now we give her only a natural food and something from our dinners just like that)and she feels better)))we play with her too much cause every cat that lives at home must move much ..))

Im really sorry about your cat. I hope that she fights through this illness. I had 2 dogs they were mother and son. They told us at the age of 12 and 13 to put them down but we couldn't we decided to treat them medicaly. They ended up living the son lived 16 years and mother lived 17years. The both passed away within days of eachother but i think they were greatful for a second chance at life. Anette Im so sorry about your cat but u have to know that anything is possible. My mother has beaten terminal cancer 2 times now. She has cancer again sadly but those 2 times prove anything can happen. Even if there not human Remember at the end of the day the ones you love in life are always worth it.
ReplyDeleteHugs to you and your family. I'd be devistated as well if this was happening to my cat. My Neighbours just had to put down there 13 year old Lab as he had cancer and refused to eat for nearly a week.
ReplyDeleteI see what they are going through right now but in the end it was better for the dog as he is in no more pain, but i know they would have loved a possible cure if there was on. If there is a treatment and a good survival rate for Kulan i'd take it.

I understand that you'll fight for her.. but sometimes it's better to let them sleep in. I had a dog and I saw her as my big sister, I loved her, and still do, till death. But then we heard that she'd cancer and had a lot of pain.. so we make the decesion to put her a sleep.. Yes, it was awfull, we all cried but we all knew that it was for the best.
I mean.. if I had a lot of pain and I can't even walk, eat and all the stuff, then I think it's ok if I will go.
But I hope she'll be fine!

First time posting here just to say I'm sorry for your cat. One day, I noticed one of my cats was acting very differently. He started eating less and drinking more (he always ate everything he could, even bones if he could find them. :p) and got very skinny and inactive very quickly. Luckily we're friends with the vets, so when they came over and saw how weak and dehidrated he was, they took him with them immediately. He was on a drip for 3 nights. When we got him he was better but still skinny. We were told he had renal insufficiency (maybe kidney failure is the proper name?). Even before the official diagnosis I did some research online and came across those words (followed by "death") over and over again. There was plenty of crying during those days, as I'm sure you can imagine. Anyway, the vets prescribed meds and a special diet, and said it seemed to be chronic. None of them looked too hopeful. This was last October. My cat is still on meds and on a diet. He acts exactly like he did before he got sick. I understand that he won't live as long as other cats, and the day I start to notice he's in pain I know I'll have to make a tough decision because the last thing I want is for him to suffer. But in the meantime he's just living his life as always, trying to get attention when he wants attention, stealing bones from other people's trash and even eating the ocasional pigeon he probably killed himself. He's just not as heavy as he used to be. He's a happy cat and , in the end, that's all I can ask for. :)

I'm so sorry! I have the same situation with my cats, being a member of the family. I commend you for fighting it! I hope that she will pull through at any rate and stay strong-- regardless what happens, you're doing the right thing, and you'll be okay and if it makes you feel better, all of us here are hoping for her recovery!

The important thing is that she’s still alive, and you can show her how much you love her. I hope the treatment works, that however long she lives, she’ll be happy and loved and not in pain. I had a dog with the same problem.
ReplyDeleteIn that time there weren't many treatments he could do, just a kind of "dialysis".
The decision was to treat or put to sleep. We decided for a very very expensive treatment, he lived for more 9 months and I don't regret one moment the money we spent or the decision of take care of him.
I think that we must do whatever we can for the ones we love, humans or animals, because if you don't you won't forgive yourself thinking how your pet would be...maybe they could had found something better to help or a cure...you keep imagining all kind of things and blaming yourself not had even tried.
The important thing is you know you did everything possible, you took care of her and until the end the only thing she will give you back is her caresses and love. So you can sleep knowing that she had the best possible from you and you can keep the good memories without remorse or regrets.
This is my opinion...love her and she will love you till the end.
