Oh man, you are just amazing! I swear the other night I was at my dead set worst. I was dangerously close to self-harm, and thanks to some support from here I have had a complete turn around, and to see you not only blogging and trying to do something about bullying in general, you're also bringing attention to, and supporting the LGBT community, and as someone who is a closeted lesbian and a huge fan this is just awesome!
ReplyDeleteI really am just so proud of what you're doing right now. The other night I wanted to die, and thanks to yourself, Sun, and some of my closest friends, I don't want to die anymore.
And also I would like to say, please, please check out the It Gets Better Project, it's directed at LGBT youth, but it is good for many young people regardless for the message it gives about bullying. I will place the link below.

So proud of you!
Thank you so much Anette!

hi Meghan. i just wanted to say, please don't ever harm yourself life is too precious. love and accept yourself just the way you are and when you ready get out and tell the world with pride about who you are.
Deletethere's a nice quote saying:
"It’s impossible” said pride.
“It’s risky” said experience.
“It’s pointless” said reason.
“Give it a try” whispered the heart.
smile and be happy girl! and please don't ever harm yourself because when you start it's very hard to stop... (talking from experience).
take care :-)
Thank you, I'm not going to. I have managed to completely snap out of it, I feel so far removed from where I was, finally got it through my thick skull that I have a lot of love and support from my friends :)
DeleteThat is a lovely quote, thank you :)
Right now I really am the happiest I have been in a long time, and not going to let myself be knocked back down!
Thank you! :D
Meghan you deserve praise too. It was your choice to stay safe and keep reading. You focused on the strength and encouragement Anette has fueled for all of us here. : )

ReplyDeleteYou should have a facebook account. :) Such tips are so much easier to follow when they come to our facebook-timeline....
ReplyDeleteDear Anette,
ReplyDeleteAfter struggling with this decision for a few days, I have decided that it is best that I share my story with you, after all.
I'd been bullied in school my entire life, shoved into computers, called names, made fun of for being one of the "nerds", etcetera. Finally, as I grew, it got worse - it got to the point that I was driven out of high school in my very first year. Forced into being homeschooled (and don't get me wrong, I do like it, but I don't like the reasons I'm being homeschooled!) because I was different.
I am autistic. High functioning autism - Asperger's syndrome - just enough to make me stick out like a sore thumb. I went to school excited to learn new things every day. I wasn't a social animal...I was a highly devoted student, paying attention to classes, taking tons of notes, trying my hardest. I was in a very advanced program, and I was there to make the best of it. Unfortunately, that made me a prime target.
I dealt with sexual harassment every day...people kept trying to get me to put out, and I got labelled as racist simply for saying no! It got to the point that people were stroking their legs at me at lunch. Pulling up their basketball shorts and stroking their legs at me.
The longer it went on, the worse it got. People would shove me down the stairs on the way to class and call it an accident. They'd do the same thing slamming me into walls. I was attacked on a regular basis, coming home bruised up and beaten. I still kept going as well as I could, despite my weak immune system making me sick so often. My grades began to fall - a typically straight A student making a mix of As, Bs and Cs. One of the teachers even joined in on the bullying, the gym teacher...simply because I'm asthmatic, and therefore not athletic in the least.
The boys would not leave me alone, and the girls kept getting angry with me because of all the unwanted attention I was getting, and you know how girls can be! Especially over men. The abuse becomes rampant. I didn't want the attention!
Eventually, after the school got what they wanted out of me, they got my test scores (I score extremely high on tests, it brings a lot of money to schools) and then they kicked me out when they had an excuse... the excuse being that I finally stood up for myself.
I didn't lay a hand on anyone. It was before class had started, and the teacher was fifteen minutes late. This girl kept hovering over my desk. I was minding my own business, trying to write a paper with the spare time I had.
She kept moving my paper, kept knocking my desk around, kept shouting in my ear. Calling me a slut, harassing me with "Who's your boyfriend, bitch? Who is it?", after I had made it clear that I kept my personal life separate from my school life. I let this go on for fifteen minutes, asking her nicely to leave me alone...and Nettie, I doubt you'll be proud of me for this, but I finally lost my temper. I finally stood up and shouted at her, "Get the FUCK OFF MY DESK and LEAVE ME ALONE."
I did not lay a hand on her! I promise. I didn't touch her. But right as I shouted...the teacher walked in. It just so happened to be the gym teacher who had joined in on the bullying. With enough fighting the school district, I managed to keep the school from putting it on my permanent record, because I really didn't do anything wrong. I had no escape from the situation. I'd been quietly trying to weather through it all for months. Because I didn't hit anyone, they just kicked me out to homeschooling instead of putting me in actual trouble.
Moral of the story is, in this world, it was perfectly okay for people to bully me...but after months of taking it, when I finally stood up for myself, I was the one who got ruined for it. It needs to stop. I try to treat people as kindly as I know how, because with the plethora of personal struggles I have right now dealing with my health, I can only imagine what others are going through, too.
You should make a Facebook account! (:
ReplyDeleteNanne: HI! Well, I do not like Facebook so i don't know about that,=) i think i can manage without. Thanks and take care;=)
ReplyDeleteRebekah: Oh, my! Your story is so sad and I understand your frustration! You tried to be a good student, who wanted to be in school and thought it was fun to learn, but other people made you leave school just because they didn't think you fitted in their "group". This is a typical thing. Someone is different and when they can't handle that they start to bully or horass him/her. it also happens in working places and also in social networks where people get together. If you do not fit in to the "norm" people react and want you to reform to their standards or they´ll push you out. Sad and I am so sorry that you, who really tried to mind your own business, doing so good in school, had to suffer from others fears and intolerance. And about the girls feeling threatened, I understand it so well. Its not ok to be to popular among the boys. Then the other girls will hate you...
I think, as you said, also there´s a weird thing in the world that the victim can be the one blamed if they stand up for themselves or simply tell their story. its like its not "ok" to be a victim. That you´re weak then and that´s not ok. I have felt this many times, if you react and if you show your feelings. Crying and begging them to stop being mean or telling you get hurt or like you did, scream and say ENOUGH! The reaction should be: Oh, I´m sorry, I didn't know you felt this way... But instead the reaction can be that it get worse: that they start to be even more mean towards you. Crazy!
But as you say, you try to treat others well and be kind and yeah, thats what I try to do to. But it is hard to be the "kind one" who always gets stepped on and therefore I think the frustration after being bullied and treated so mean by others are hard cause you want to make them feel the same pain, but they won't. They can't and never will understand the hurt inside.
Thanks so much for telling your story and I think you are really strong and never ever stop loving to study!;=) Sleep well!
Oona: Hi! Can you re-write what your petition was about? To many comments that day;=) Sleep well!
ReplyDeleteMeghan: I´m so happy you didn't harm yourself! Thanks for not doing that;=) It will get better and as you can see, we are many who have had hard times but its getting better and as you say, you can get support of me and others here;=) Better you write here and we´ll give you strength that day and the next day and so on;=) Please keep strong! And I´ll check that link you wrote! Thanks for telling me about it;=) Sleep well and stay strong!
I don't think I've replied yet, I'm too tired to remember (damn you insomnia!), but thank you so much though for replying to me, when I read this, this morning I was choking back tears! Right now I have to say I'm much better than I have been in a long time (since mid last year), and thank you so, so much for offering support and making sure I will stay strong. I will be doing everything I can to stay strong and to make sure I don't fall back into the same pit of despair and self loathing I was in. Thank you so much Anette!

Good evening Anette so I have a simple question Why you don't have a facebook ?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Love
Isa
You sleep well too, Nettie. Thanks for talking to everyone. As for me, I'm about to attend three academic meetings and get back to showing them what I'm really made of. Thanks for showing me how to stay strong even through it all. You went through hellish scrutiny in front of the entire world and just kept going...and that is what inspires me. It takes a special kind of person to make it through that, and even more special to come out stronger.
ReplyDeleteHii Anette! Thank you so much for answering my post! Well I asked the CLB (an organization that helps pupils at school and home etc.) if I may start an anti-bullying campaign at school. They were really enthusiastic about my idea. So now they have to discuss it. But if it's a "yes" I can do whatever I want with this campaign. My first idea was to ask artists and famous people about their opinion about bullying. And because you blog a lot about it, you were the first person in my head :-D So I will use all the opinions in a video, powerpoint and whatever to tell the pupils that bullying is not done. If this campaign is a blast, I'll do it in other schools too :-) There are a lot of people who support me and it would be an honor for me if you support the campaign too.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course sweet dreams too! ^-^
Hi Anette, this campaign sounds a great idea, I've recently joined to the cause because I think that bullicide is not the best solution for weak people.I´m a teacher and I can't believe my eyes when I heard stories from my pupils about bullying That's why offenders have to be punished. I'll tell to all my fb friendlist that support this cause.
ReplyDeleteRemember as Delain said in this song we are the Others,"if you feel mistreated, torn and cheated you're not alone, we are the others"
It depends on us that nobody else must be bullied.
have a nice dreams dear Anette!
cheers from Argentina
